(This is written after I read a blog written by my homie FRQ regarding the standards women set when choosing a man........ )
YALL
They sold us that dream
With Barbie dolls and a Barbie house
It was white with 3 floors with nice pink and white furniture
An elevator
And lots of pots and pans in the kitchen for us to cook with
If your family could afford to buy you a red or pink Barbie corvette
you were really living a dream.
Barbie wasn’t single was she?
Nope
She had Ken
They even got “urban” and painted his skin brown so that
Pretty little brown girls like me could feel like
the dream life
was possible for us too
Ken had a brief case and Bermuda shorts for the many vacations
WE
Would take
Ken didn’t have a babies mama
Then THEY took you to church
Where your preacher could teach you how to better enhance
that life PERFECT life
By living Holy and
abiding by the Good word
The preacher became your idol..
How great would it be for your KEN to be a man of God
And assist you with living the good life
The preacher is perfect right?
They let you play dress up and draw in color pencil the color’s of your wedding
All you know is if you worked really hard
and looked really pretty
Your
Ken would come
They taught us from the time we were toddlers that we could be
JUST LIKE
BARBIE
They never say Ken wont be 6’4 with a perfect six pack
Or that he wont
have
Shiny white teeth and hair combed ever so gently to the right side of his perfectly shaped head
So..........
you try to turn
Fredrick
into
Ken
Fix him up, dress him in a suit and Bermuda shorts
But that’s not him…
He’s Fredrick
So you choose Michael
Take him to your Barbie house
And to your church to meet your pastor
So he can see an example in the flesh
And he kinda begins to
look like Ken
ON THE OUTSIDE
but......
Internally
he’s Michael
In the movies
The men are just like KEN
They have it together
Come when you call
Say sweet words, and shower you with thoughtful gestures
And undo everything they did wrong in the end
They sold us these dreams
Which is why we set our standards for our men the way we do
Nobody told us
Ken isn’t real
He’s plastic
and plastic
MELTS
They didn’t say Barbie houses are hard to maintain
And a house is
only a house
They didn’t teach us the definition of a
HOME
That’s why we work so hard to create a Malibu Barbie life
Because they taught us that from the time we children
Those fantasies and dreams we had as a child are no different
than manners
you forget them sometimes
but they are the basis of who you are
Little girls become women
Who try to make fantasies
REALITY
Its sad but some of us are so fixated on creating this fantasy life that we go in one of two directions
North- which is when you sit around and wait on Mr. Wonderful to come
Or
South- When you spend your entire existence trying to piece that lifestyle together
Yall can catch me going WEST
Sometimes we women have to understand that the definition of perfection
Doesn’t have SHIT
to do with Mattel
and its Barbie story
Perfection
is living with what works for us
If your idea of perfection is to be single
Then stand firm in that
If your idea of perfection is to have a man who is smart,
Kind
and spiritual who works hard don’t settle for anything other than that
Just know….
He may not be packaged
like KEN
I think the most beautiful thing about
Barbie
Was that she was admired by so many people
She could do anything

She was a lawyer, a doctor, teacher,
a mom
all while being beautiful
I’ll internalize that part of her
And create my own
PERFECT life
only it will be
By my design……..
Thats my $1,920 cents!
Love yall
